Foundation and Building Perimeter Plantings
Layered plantings that frame commercial buildings: right-sized shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials that soften walls without blocking windows or signage.
The beds around a commercial building do two jobs at once. They soften hard walls and make the building feel finished, and they guide the eye toward entrances and signage. When they are done well, the building looks established and cared for. When shrubs are planted too close, too large or too random, they cover windows, hide signs, trap moisture against walls and become a constant pruning chore. In the Nashville area, many commercial foundation beds are planted with a handful of fast-growing shrubs that outgrow their space within a few years.
We plan perimeter plantings in layers. Taller plants go at corners and blank walls, medium shrubs fill the middle, and low groundcovers and grasses edge the bed, all sized to their mature spread and kept back from walls and windows. We choose species that handle the exposure on each side of the building, whether hot afternoon sun, deep shade or reflected heat, and we keep plants away from signage, cameras and lighting. Mulch, drainage and edging are part of the plan, so water moves away from the foundation instead of pooling against it.

Perimeter Plantings FAQ
How far from the wall should shrubs be?
Generally a few feet or more, depending on the mature spread of each plant.
Can plants hide security cameras?
We plan around cameras, lights and signs, and we keep those areas clear.
Do foundation plants harm walls?
Not when sized and spaced correctly, with good drainage and no mulch piled against the wall.
Can you replace an old bed?
Yes. We remove the old plants, rebuild the soil and replant at proper spacing.
What if one side is deep shade?
We choose shade-tolerant plants for that exposure.
